Spiral Corten Planter
Spiral-Shaped Corten Planter with Custom-Fabricated Frame and Integrated Drainage
This 252-meter-long spiral planter was developed to fit precisely on a pre-cast concrete base, posing a major engineering challenge: the metal structure not only had to align perfectly with a curved concrete path, but also remain flexible enough to adapt to subtle variations on site. Instead of using rigid prefabricated forms, we designed a fully modular system with custom-made joints and bolted segments, all manufactured in-house. This solution allowed fast installation and structural alignment that would have been nearly impossible with concrete or off-the-shelf metal parts.
Inside the corten shell, the planter includes a metal containment system filled with stone, isolation layers, and soil, ensuring both durability and root protection. A continuous water flow logic was integrated into the spiral’s slope, enabling easy irrigation and natural drainage from one end to the other. Integrated wooden benches follow the curve of the corten shell, offering shaded rest points within the commemorative space. All connections were developed by IDEA from scratch — a fabrication feat that’s rarely seen in the region.
This spiral planter solved a complex technical and spatial problem with an elegant and fully buildable corten steel system.
